Every year Paris has a secret Dîner en Blanc, “dinner in white,” that draws thousands of people. They share one big secret, and execute the event to perfection. It starts with one person who invites several friends, who are then permitted to invite several friends, and so on. Somehow the dinner stays fairly exclusive, and very well organized. Pretty soon you have 4,400 people meeting in the plaza at the cathedral of Notre Dame, and 6,200 in a courtyard of the Louvre. They dress in white, bring their own tables/chairs and food, and spend the evening wining and dining under the stars. Sounds magical, no? New York is attempting to create a similar feast this August.
