I’ve been wanting to see Mud for a while now and we finally had the chance last night. It’s a beautiful film, with incredible footage of the Arkansas delta and Mississippi river, and a very compelling story. The movie’s a coming-of-age drama where two teenage boys find an abandoned boat on an island with a fugitive living in it. They form an unlikely friendship and help him make his way off the island, getting caught in the rough details of his life in the process. It reminded me of a modern-day Huck Finn adventure – exploring the river, growing up, and learning what kind of person you are in the process. The writing is extremely good, and amidst the beautiful scenery and mischievous wanderings the young boys deal with the complexities and realities of love. It’s incredibly touching and every performance is stellar, especially Tye Sheridan and Matthew McConaughey. I highly recommend a viewing if you get a chance. Best movie I’ve seen so far this year.
Shakespeare said it best: "The world's a city full of straying streets." If you just wander, it's amazing what you'll find and where you'll end up.
